film quilts

16mm found footage

Linking the crafts of quilt making and film editing this series uses 16mm found footage, cut in the shape of a quilt pattern, to bring together neglected material histories of cinema and craft. From a distance the film quilts resemble stained glass, and up close, the photographic stills can be examined within tactile proximity.

Precipitated by the demise of celluloid and the proliferation of the digital moving image; these film quilts weave together new narratives with images that would otherwise be discarded. Similar to how quilts can be formed from fabric sewn together to create a larger piece, these works embrace typically unwanted pieces of film to form unique and original compositions.

Found footage is from my own collection accumulated from craigslist and marketplace + donations from Xinema film located in Vancouver.
