hole

2025

performance | 20 mins

To create a hole in 16mm film is to create a disturbance. Through analog film, projectors and a hole punch, Morgan talks about the implications of the hole punch onto film, weaving in threads of photo histories, ideas of destruction and censorship.

The performance is divided into 3 parts
TO MAKE A HOLE (a hole is only a hole if it is surrounded by something \ to make a hole on film is to create a disturbance \ early photo editors would hole punch negatives to destroy the image, making it unusable \ they would call this to kill the negative )
TO FILL A HOLE (to fill a hole on a film negative is to create a new image \ Ontario censor board would remove film sections if they were seen as not suitable for audiences \ queer artists are targeted through this censorship)
TO FIND A HOLE (to create a hole on a film negative is also to create a tiny circle (hole), i find these holes everywhere \ they follow me home then they are under my fridge, in the sink, beside the toilet, then in my bed, attached to my leg, my neck)

Developed as part of the Exquisite Pressure residency at What Lab with the Festival of Recorded Movement (FORM).

Early photo editors would hole punch film negatives to reject an image, making it unusable. They would call this ‘to kill the negative’. Tried something fun and new at WhatLab in Vancouver. Working with ideas of hole punching film negatives, censorship & ‘destroying’ film. #shootfilm #analog #yvr #analogfilm #filmperformance #expandedcinema #whatlab #yvrartist #queerart #queerartist #16mm #filmmaker
